Career Scientist Award: Factors restricting mobility in older adults with chronic diseases

Authors: This award was funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

Professor Fox was granted a Career Scientist Award to develop knowledge that can help keep older adults with chronic diseases from losing their ability to do their usual activities during a hospital stay. The program focused on:

  1. Finding out which caregiver behaviors, organizational structures, and care practices reduce mobility and increase bed rest in older adults with chronic diseases
  2. Creating strategies to remove barriers to being mobile in hospitals
  3. Finding out which strategies work best.

Hospital administrators and policymakers can use the findings to reduce the barriers that keep older adults from being mobile in the hospital. This will allow older adults with chronic diseases to be healthier while they are in the hospital and to go back to their lives in the community.
