People at risk for hospital readmission are typically older in age with serious illnesses such as kidney disease, heart failure, and/or diabetes. After a hospital stay, many are discharged home with high care needs. Consequently, their families often play a key role in helping them with their care, a critical aspect of which is recognizing when a person’s health is worsening and what to do about it. Yet, we know very little about family caregivers’ perspectives of their preparedness to do so. In this paper, we present family caregivers’ perspectives of their preparedness to recognize, and appropriately respond to, the signs indicating that their relative’s health may be worsening.
